"Can I apply for CLAT?" is the single most asked question in our counselling sessions — and the answer surprises most students: almost everyone can. CLAT has no age limit, no stream restriction and no attempt cap. The eligibility criteria are among the most open of any national exam in India. Here is the complete, accurate breakdown.
💡 Biggest myth to ignore: "Only Arts students can crack law entrance." False — at Surya Law Academy, some of our strongest NLU selections (including CLAT AIR 17 NLSIU, Anish Gupta) have come from pure Commerce and Science backgrounds.
CLAT 2027 Eligibility — Qualifying Exam
| Programme | Qualifying Exam |
|---|---|
| CLAT UG (BA LLB, BBA LLB, B.Com LLB) | Class 12 or equivalent from a recognised board — passed OR appearing in the current year |
| CLAT PG (LLM) | LLB (3-year or 5-year integrated) from a recognised university |
Minimum Marks Required in Class 12
The minimum qualifying percentage depends on your category. Note this is the minimum eligibility, not the admission cutoff — NLU admission is purely on CLAT rank.
| Category | Minimum Class 12 Marks |
|---|---|
| General / UR | 45% |
| OBC-NCL / EWS | 45% |
| SC / ST | 40% |
| Persons with Disability | 40% |
ℹ️ Important: For candidates who have taken the Class 12 exam but are awaiting results, a provisional admission is possible. Failure to secure the minimum marks later leads to cancellation of the admission offer — so do not relax after your CLAT rank.
Is There an Age Limit for CLAT 2027?
No. Since 2017, the Consortium of NLUs removed all age restrictions for CLAT UG. Neither a minimum nor a maximum age applies. This means:
- A 16-year-old appearing in Class 12 can apply.
- A mature-age candidate of any age can also apply if qualified.
- Drop-year and working professionals aged 25+ face zero age-based obstacles.
Can I Attempt CLAT Multiple Times?
Yes — unlimited attempts. There is no cap on how many times you can appear for CLAT. This makes it a low-risk, high-value exam: if your rank improves, you get a better NLU. Every attempt is a fresh, independent qualification.
Stream Restrictions — Science, Commerce or Arts?
None. CLAT is a skill-based test measuring three things — English reading comprehension, logical and legal reasoning, and basic quantitative aptitude. None of this depends on your Class 12 subjects. In fact:
| Stream | Advantage in CLAT |
|---|---|
| Arts / Humanities | Familiarity with civics, history and current affairs — helps GK passages |
| Commerce | Strong quantitative skills — easier handling of the 10% Quant section |
| Science (PCM/PCB) | Analytical and logical thinking — strong Logical Reasoning foundation |
Nationality & Residence Requirements
CLAT is open to Indian nationals, NRIs, and Foreign Nationals/PIO/OCI cardholders. A few NLUs have additional domicile reservations (e.g., a small percentage reserved for candidates from the home state) — but the main admission is through the common CLAT merit list.
What If I Am Appearing in Class 12 Now?
Fully eligible. Many of our top selections — including AIR 17 NLSIU and AIR 32 NLSIU selections — were Class 12 appearing students who wrote CLAT in December and their boards in March. Just remember to complete the qualifying exam to keep your seat.
🎯 Bottom line: If you have passed or are appearing in Class 12 with the minimum required marks for your category — you are eligible for CLAT 2027. No age limit, no attempt cap, no stream barrier. Now the only question is how well you prepare.
